The Global Talent Stream is a program that allows Canadian employers to hire highly skilled foreign workers in an expedited manner. If you are a foreign worker with the skills and experience that are in high demand in Canada, you may be eligible for the Global Talent Stream.
There are two streams under the Global Talent Stream:
- The Global Skills Strategy stream is for foreign workers who have been offered a job by a Canadian employer in an occupation that is listed as high-demand, and who meet the program’s criteria.
- The Canada Express Entry stream is for foreign workers who have been invited to apply for permanent residence through Express Entry, and who meet the program’s criteria.
If you are eligible for the Global Talent Stream, you may be able to get your work permit in as little as 10 days.
The Global Talent Stream is a great way for highly skilled foreign workers to come to Canada and work in occupations that are in high demand.
Applying for a work permit under the Global Talent Stream is a two-step process.
First, the employer must get a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC). The LMIA is a document that assesses the impact that hiring a foreign worker will have on the Canadian labour market.
To get an LMIA, the employer must:
- demonstrate that they have made efforts to hire Canadian citizens or permanent residents;
- prove that they are offering wages and working conditions that are comparable to those offered to Canadians; and
- show that they have a plan in place to help the foreign worker transition to permanent residence.
Once the employer has received an LMIA, they can then apply for a work permit for the foreign worker. The foreign worker must submit the following documents with their application:
- a copy of the LMIA;
- a copy of the job offer from the employer; and
- proof of their qualifications.
